Dutch Ambassador termed Taxila stone art as “world class”

“Impressive stone work, really world class”, these comments were noted by Henny Fokel de Vries has been ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands after her visit to Gandhara Art Village Taxila. She visited the art village and took keen interest in various art work on stone created by the local artisans of Taxila who are in creating and carving designs for centuries as their master craftsmanship is known across the world. Mr Zahreer Shah zaildar, Rafeeq Butt and Jarrar Ali Shah was also present on this occasion .

During her visit, Mrs Henny de Vries visited the various galleries of the art village and met with local artisans and lauded their commendable work on stone. Briefing the Dutch envoy, Gandhara Stone Art Village Association Chairman Syed Zaheer Hussain Shah said the art village was established in Taxila by established by Punjab Small Industries Department at the cost of over Rs104.360 million for better promotion and marketing of stone craft being produced by master artisans of the art village. He said that aim of establishment of the village has said the move behind establishing the village near world known Buddhist monastery and stupa dated back to 2nd Century AD known as Mohra Maradu was aimed at mainstreaming the centuries-old skills of craftsmanship of Taxila artisans by utilizing latest computer-based technologies to produce market-oriented products. “This initiative played a pivotal impact on the capacity of the artisans community to produce better quality artifacts especially Gandhara art products,” Mr Shah added. He informed the Dutch envoy the art put a positive impact on the cluster and resultantly the capacity of the artisans’ community to produce better quality artifacts with improved design has been noticed. Sufficient awareness was created about the Gandhara art products through printing of catalogues, Books and participation in exhibitions.
